Neon plants can be an unusual addition to your collection and can become the main accent in any interior. Despite their unusual appearance, it is quite simple to care for neon-colored flowers, because it is not different from caring for ordinary plants. Let’s find out more about them.
Best Neon Houseplants
Moonlight Philodendron
Our list of bright neon indoor plants begins with Moonlight Philodendron. Philodendron is an evergreen flowering perennial plant from the Araceae family. There are about 900 species of this plant, but one of the most unusual of them is the limelight Moonlight Philodendron.
This bright green plant is thermophilic. It adapts perfectly to the summer heat as long as the room is kept at optimum humidity. The plant does not require special temperature conditions. It feels comfortable at a temperature of 20-25 °C. To prevent the plant from overheating, its leaves are sprayed and washed with settled water. For the philodendron to be lush and beautiful, you should choose the right place for it.
The diffused sun is best. Avoid direct sunlight on the plant. Moonlight Philodendron needs to be watered regularly, especially during spring and summer. At low room temperatures, watering is reduced. Due to excessive watering, the plant leaves may turn yellow. Drought must also be avoided, as its beautiful neon foliage would lose its appeal.
Ceylon Golden Plant
Renowned for its ability to purify the air, this neon green plant is a perfect choice if your room lacks light. The plant has a bright lime green leaf in the shape of lobes with a slight golden hue. Caring for the neon philodendron is simple, but keep in mind that high humidity is required.
At home, you can compensate for low humidity by spraying the leaves. Other than that, caring for the Ceylon Golden plant is similar to caring for the Moonlight Philodendron, as both plants belong to the same genus.
Crassula Sarmentosa ‘Comet’
Among lime green indoor plants, one cannot fail to distinguish Crassula sarmentosa ‘Comet’. This ornamental succulent features dark green leaves that become almost neon green with pink and yellow hue with deep red borders when kept in full sun. A common feature for all crassulas is the arrangement of thick, fleshy leaves on the stem opposite each other.
This houseplant is very fond of bright lighting (4-5 hours a day) but without direct sunlight. Crassula sarmentosa cannot stand extreme heat. The loss of their light green foliage and burns is a consequence of the negative effects of direct sunlight over a long period. Caring for this plant at home includes adherence to the watering regime.
All representatives of this genus are drought-resistant plants. After watering, the soil must be completely dry before it can be re-moistened. In winter, watering is reduced to once every 7-10 days. The optimal summer temperature is 23-25 °C during the day and up to 10 °C at night. This difference between day and night temperatures is beneficial for the succulent, as it resembles its natural conditions.
Neon Pothos (Epipremnum Aureum)
This bright houseplant has elongated, spear-shaped, lime green leaves. Neon Pothos is fast-growing, so it needs timely pruning. This light green plant is best grown in a well-lit room. But it should be remembered that the leaves of neon green Pothos do not tolerate direct sunlight, because of it they become lethargic, soft, lose their brightness and become dull, after a while they completely fall off.
Stems slow down their growth from direct sunlight. Therefore, for normal growth, a place in the western or eastern side of the house is suitable, where there is enough bright, but at the same time, diffused light. For this light green houseplant to feel comfortable and grow well, normal room temperature is suitable. Watering is necessary only when the topsoil dries up.
Lemon Lime Philodendron (Philodendron Hederaceum)
This tropical lime-colored plant can be a great addition to your collection. A distinctive feature of neon philodendron is its heart leaf, which stays green throughout the year. Lemon-lime philodendron is very similar in appearance to neon Pothos, which we described above. But these are completely different plants that should not be confused.
The main difference between the two is that their leaves, although both heart-shaped, have different textures. So, bright green leaves of Pothos plants are larger and thicker, and also waxy to the touch, while Philodendron has softer and thinner ones. The plant is thermophilic and needs high humidity. Direct sunlight should be avoided.
Coleus ‘Limelight’
Coleus ‘Limelight’ is a versatile lime green plant that can be grown both indoors and in a garden bed. Its bright neon leaves are very decorative. It also produces incredibly cute purple flowers! This plant is photophilous, however, direct sunlight is undesirable, since when the light is too bright, the leaves lose their brightness and become pale. Therefore, when choosing a place for lime green Coleus, give preference to windows facing east or west.
This neon plant can withstand the rise in temperature in summer, but only if it is not forgotten to water. A sharp drop in temperature harms plants. If in the summer months the temperature drops below 15 °C, the growth of a light green plant slows down. Coleus grown at home feel great at room temperature and can tolerate a drop in temperature to 10 °C.
However, you need to try to protect them from sudden temperature changes. Remember that Coleus needs regular watering. The soil should not dry out too much. In addition, it is advisable to spray the plant from time to time, preferably in the evening. In winter, watering is slightly reduced.
Echeveria ‘Neon Breakers’
This succulent forms a rosette of fantastic gray-green or blue-green leaves with neon pink to lavender blushing. In the summer, the plant feels comfortable at room temperature, and in winter it is desirable to provide coolness. All succulents love bright light and are not afraid of the sun’s rays, because they already have natural protection in the form of an abundant wax coating.
For indoor cultivation, the south side of the room is perfect. Water the plant sparingly, because, in nature, it grows in drought conditions. Between watering, you need to ensure that the soil dries well. If the plant does not have enough moisture, it would signal about it with wrinkled leaves. The usual method of watering, in this case, is not suitable – you need to make sure that moisture does not get on the leaves and does not wash off the wax coating. It is more advisable to use bottom watering.
Arrowhead Vine (Syngonium ‘Neon Robusta’)
‘Neon Robusta’ is a great air-purifying houseplant with heart-shaped neon pink leaves patterned in green variegation. It is a relatively simple houseplant to care for: it grows in the same conditions as its popular cousin, the philodendron. Syngonium loves bright light but does not like direct sunlight. Diffused light is best, as harsh rays can burn or discolor delicate leaves and vines.
Water the plant regularly during the spring and summer months, and reduce the frequency of watering in winter. Never allow the soil to remain wet for a long time. In winter, the Syngonium flower needs more light than in summer – at this time, due to insufficient lighting, its leaves become small and colorless. The most comfortable temperature for a plant in summer is 20-22 °C, while in winter the temperature in the room should not fall below 16 °C. Plants are always part of the interior.
They enliven the atmosphere and make the room cozy. But sometimes you may want to add a zest to the floral variety. To do this, you can safely use plants in neon shades. It is quite easy to care for them, so even a beginner in the world of gardening can handle it. Well, as a reward you receive an unusual plant that would delight you with its unusual bright foliage.
